1884 (20 June) cover from Shanghai toAustria, endorsed "p. 'French Mail' via Naples", franked on front with HK QV 10c green, tied
by Shanghai "S1" obliterator in black, SHANGHAE A JU 20 84 cds alongside, on reverse with HONG KONG A JU 24 84 transit
cds, AMBUL-FOGGIA BOLOGNA 30 LUG 84 cds, and MEIDLING 1/8 84 arrival cds, two parallel chisel slits as disinfection
indicator across the back of the cover, fine and extremely scarce. Photo
French and British mail during 1884 (the 5th pandemic period of cholera) were usually offloaded in Italy. This cover is believed to
be the latest recorded date for disinfected mail of this period, also late usage of "S1" and interesting overland route from Naples
through Bologna to Austra.
